John Hartman Smit, Jr.
, 86, of West New York, passed peacefully at home on June 12, 2019, with his wife, son, daughter, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren by his side. He was born and raised in Union City, New Jersey.
John served in the Korean War from February 20, 1953 - December 17, 1954, and was honorable discharged on January 31, 1961. He also worked in the West New York Post Office as a supervisor of clerks. He enjoyed his retirement by spending time with family and reading numerous novels. He was also an avid lover of horse racing.
He leaves his wife Nancy Smit of West New York, NJ daughter Cori Heim of West New York, NJ, son Richard Smit of Titusville, FL, daughters-in-law, Tara Greeley of Valley Cottage, NY, Tammy Smit of Titusville, FL, son in law Charles Heim of Jersey City, NJ, grandchildren Nicole Smit of Valley Cottage, NY, Jayson Heim of West New York, NJ, and Dean Smit of Titusville, FL, step-grandchildren John, Jessica, Desiree, Dominic, Peter, and Donald of Titusville, FL, sisters Marion Eckerson of Weehawken, NJ, and Agatha Healey of Keansburg, NJ. Predeceased by brothers Fred Smit and Richard Smit, and sisters Agnes Healey and Martha Pastre. He also left behind many nieces and nephews along with grandnieces and nephews.
